NHL Phoenix Coyotes Team Information |
| The current Phoenix Coyotes started their life as the Winnipeg Jets, originally of the World Hockey Association (WHA). Then owner Ben Hatskin joined the World Hockey Association in 1971 winning three championships. As the WHA ran into problems, the Winnipeg Jets joined the National Hockey League in the 1979 expansion. | ![]() |
The mid-nineties saw the rising salaries and stingy economics of a "small market team" eventually catch up with the Jets. After playing a total of 1,400 games they were sold to a partnership of Richard Burke and Steven Gluckstern. The Jets moved to Phoenix, Arizona and created a brand new identity as the Phoenix Coyotes for the 1996-97 season. |
