Toronto Maple Leafs Team Information

The Toronto Maple Leafs were founded in November of 1917 as the Toronto Arenas, in the newly formed National Hockey League. The current Maple Leafs are one of the most recognized franchises in professional hockey, along with the Montreal Canadiens.

In late 1917 the owners of the National Hockey Association (NHA) decided to reform, into the National Hockey League (NHL) without the previous Toronto Blue Shirts franchise being invited. Many of the new Toronto Arenas team's players had previously played for Toronto's NHA franchise. The Toronto franchise played their first game on December 19, 1917 and despite winning the Stanley Cup in the league's first year, the team would struggle financially.

Rescued from bankruptcy, in 1919 Toronto's professional hockey team was renamed the St. Patricks, changing their colors to green and white.

In 1927 a new company headed by Conn Smythe and Hugh Aird purchased the club and renamed them as the Maple Leafs. They also began construction of Maple Leaf Gardens, where the Leafs would begin playing in the 1931-32 season.

The franchise would go on to win 13 Stanley Cups, the last being in 1967.
