Professional Hockey Leagues - Central Hockey League (CHL)

Professional Hockey Leagues - Central Hockey League (CHL)

The CHL was reborn in 1992 as a centrally owned league operated by Ray and Monte Miron and funded by Chicago businessman and minor league sports entrepreneur Horn Chen. The original CHL was a AAA league with NHL affiliations that folded in 1984. The CHL has had success in its original markets and in 1996 added three teams from the disbanding Southern Hockey League, creating an eastern division. The league now stretches from San Antonio to Topeka and east to Fayetteville, NC. Indianapolis, once an IHL team and owned by Chen, will be joining the league this season. However, the CHL has experienced difficulty expanding into some markets and has faced direct pressure from invading leagues in others. Its recent merger with the WPHL may help with this.
