Professional Hockey Leagues - International Hockey League (IHL) Turner Cup Winners
![]() |
Placed in competition in 1945 by the league's Board of Governors, the Turner Cup was awarded annually since the Detroit Auto Club won the first league championship on March 2, 1946. The original Turner Trophy bears little resemblance to today's prize. In fact, the original looked more like the NHL's Stanley Cup of the 1920s, with two tiers surrounding a bowl. The "new" trophy, cost $1,500. Like the original, it was manufactured in Detroit. However, this one looks much different than the two it replaced. It has eight bands beneath the bowl with room to accommodate the names of all players, coaches and trainers associated with IHL champions since its inception. The trophy is recognized by hockey fans everywhere as the IHL's top prize. It currently resides at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto, since the IHL was disbanded. |
