For the second time in its history the Memorial Cup finals were played outside of Canada as the Portland Winter Hawks were the hosts for the second time in three years. The Winter Hawks were awarded the right to host the 86 tournament by having the best record in the Western Hockey League by a December deadline. In the WHL finals the Kamloops Blazers defeated the Medicine Hat Tigers in five games to win the President's Cup. In the OHL final series Guelph defeated the Belleville Bulls eight points to four points in an eight-point series to win the J. Ross Robertson Cup. The Hull Olympiques won the QMJHL championship by sweeping the Drummondville Voltigeurs in a best of nine series. At the conclusion of the six game round robin tournament the Platers and Hull were tied with a record of two wins and one loss but Guelph advanced to the final as a result of posting a 3-1 win over the Olympiques. Hull would meet the winner of the Portland-Kamloops tiebreaker as both teams finished with identical 1-2 records. In the tiebreaker Kamloops skated to an easy 8-1 win to advance to meet Hull in the semi final. In the semi final Hull Olympiques posted a 9-3 win to advance to the final. In the final game the Guelph Platers recorded a 6-2 win to capture Memorial Cup. The Memorial Cup was originally known as the OHA Memorial Cup and was donated by the Ontario Hockey Association in March, 1919. Initially the Cup was awarded to the national junior hockey champions of Canada. Later on it came to signify Junior 'A' hockey supremacy when in 1934, junior hockey in Canada was divided into 'A' and 'B' classifications. In 1971, junior 'A' hockey was divided once again to form a major junior and a Tier 'II' level. The Memorial Cup was awarded to the higher category. In 1972, a round-robin tournament format replaced the old play-down system to determine the champions. Since then, the champions of the Western Hockey League (WHL), the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) and the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), along with a host club, have met each spring in a round-robin series with the two top teams playing off in a sudden-death game to determine the Cup champions.
