Canadian Junior Hockey 1990 - 91 Memorial Cup
The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and Quebec City hosted the 1991 Memorial Cup tournament as for the second year in a row the tournament would be a four team event without a host team.
Chicoutimi Sagueneens and the Drummondville Voltigeurs represented the QMJHL in the Memorial Cup. Chicoutimi defeated the Voltigeurs in four games to win the QMJHL title. The Spokane Chiefs won the Western Hockey League title by sweeping the Lethbridge Hurricanes in four games to win the President's Cup. The Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds defeated the Oshawa Generals in six games to win their second J. Ross Robertson Cup, represented the Ontario Hockey League.
The Spokane Chiefs outscored their opponents 22 to 8 in the round robin as they posted wins of 7-3 over Drummondville, 7-1 over Chicoutimi and 8-4 over Sault Ste. Marie. The loss to Spokane was the Greyhounds' third of the tournament eliminating them. Drummondville and Chicoutimi met in the semi final with the Voltigeurs posting a 2-1 overtime victory.
In the final game Spokane maintained their domination over their opposition as they skated to a 5-1 win to become the second U.S. based team in history to win the Memorial Cup. The Memorial Cup was originally known as the OHA Memorial Cup and was donated by the Ontario Hockey Association in March, 1919. Initially the Cup was awarded to the national junior hockey champions of Canada. Later on it came to signify Junior 'A' hockey supremacy when in 1934, junior hockey in Canada was divided into 'A' and 'B' classifications. In 1971, junior 'A' hockey was divided once again to form a major junior and a Tier 'II' level. The Memorial Cup was awarded to the higher category. In 1972, a round-robin tournament format replaced the old play-down system to determine the champions. Since then, the champions of the Western Hockey League (WHL), the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) and the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), along with a host club, have met each spring in a round-robin series with the two top teams playing off in a sudden-death game to determine the Cup champions. |
