It consists of nine teams, divided into two divisions, with four teams in the East Division and five in the West Division. The CFL is the highest professional level of Canadian football and is headquartered in Toronto.. Eight are charter members from the league's inaugural 1958 season: the BC Lions, Calgary Stampeders, Edmonton Elks (formerly Eskimos), Hamilton Tiger-Cats, Montreal Alouettes, Saskatchewan Roughriders, Toronto Argonauts, and Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Although expansion teams have joined the league throughout its history, especially during the league's brief expansion into the United States, only the Ottawa Redblacks continue to play in the league today.

Canadian Football Championship(s) Grey Cup

The Grey Cup (Coupe Grey) is both the name of the Canadian Football League (CFL) championship game and of the trophy awarded to the winning team. The game is contested between the winners of the CFL's East and West divisional playoff winners and held since 2022 on the third Sunday of November.

Dominion of Canada Championship(s)

The Grey Cup was commissioned in 1909 by The Earl Grey, then Canada's governor general, who originally hoped to donate it for the country's senior amateur ice hockey championship. After the Allan Cup was donated for that purpose, Grey instead made his trophy available to the winner of the Canadian Dominion Football Championship, the national championship of Canadian football, contested since 1882, With the creation of the Canadian Rugby Union in 1891, the national championship games were held every year prior to the creation of the Grey Cup except 1899, 1903 and 1904. The championship was for Eastern Canada teams and also allowed for teams to challenge the winner to claim the championship.

Canadian Rugby/Football Union Championship - Grey Cup

In 1909 all football in Canada was amateur and was governed by the Canadian Rugby Union. All of the Unions, or football leagues, who played under them and were members in good standing, were eligible to compete for the Grey Cup. Teams in Quebec and Ontario were the sole competitors until 1921, when teams from the west also entered the competition. Determining the champion was a very involved process since so many organizations were involved and many played by different rules. An elaborate series of “playdowns” was scheduled which involved the Intercollegiate Union, the Interprovincial Union, the Ontario Union and then, if they decided to travel east for the contest, the champion of the senior western provincial unions. Canada's participation in World War I resulted in the cancellation of the championship from 1916 to 1918. The Grey Cup game was also cancelled in 1919 due to a lack of interest from the Interprovincial Rugby Football Union (IRFU) and the intercollegiate Union. After 1921, when teams from western Canada became eligible for competition, circumstances occasionally arose which prevented them from traveling east for the championship. The championship game was always held in the east until 1955. As some Unions became more professional, the Intercollegiate Union felt they were playing at a disadvantage, and ceased to challenge for the trophy. In both the west and the east, the Interprovincial Unions became the strongest, and eventually evolved into the western and eastern divisions of the Canadian Football League in the 1950’s. During the second world war the Unions ceased playing in 1942. Grey Cup play was expected to be suspended along with the unions; however, the military felt the game and sport would serve as a morale booster and organized teams at bases across the country. For the following three years, Grey Cup competition was limited to military teams, and in the 1942 Grey Cup, the Toronto RCAF Hurricanes defeated the Winnipeg RCAF Bombers 8–5 to become the first non-civilian team to win the national championship. The conclusion of the war led to the reformation of civilian teams. The 1954 game marked the end of the amateur era as the top teams completed their transition to professional organizations.

In the 1950s the Interprovincial Rugby Football Union (IRFU) and Western Interprovincial Football Union (WIFU) distanced themselves from the Canadian Rugby Union (CRU, forming the Canadian Football Council (CFC) in 1956 to administer the game at the professional level. Two years later, on January 18, 1958, the CFC withdrew from the CRU and the IRFU and the WIFU merged into the Canadian Football League (CFL). The new league formally assumed control of the Grey Cup from the CRU
