Memorial Cup The Toronto Canoe Club Paddlers squared off against the Selkirk Juniors, starring Joe Simpson, in the two-game, total-goal Memorial Cup final. Games were played on March 23 and 25 in Toronto. The Toronto Canoe Club Paddlers reached the Memorial Cup by beating the Stratford Midgets in a two game, total goal playoff. They lost the first game 6-5 to the Stratford Midgets with a 10-2 win in game 2 to win 15-8.The Paddlers beat the Quebec-champion Loyola College of Montreal 16-4, and beat the Fort William Beavers 16-1. The Selkirk Juniors (Fishermen) used exhibition games for keeping in shape for the Memorial Cup games. In the first game of the Memorial Cup the Selkirk team was beaten 10-1 by the Toronto Canoe Club In front of about 3,000 fans. The Toronto Canoe Club wrapped up the Memorial Cup on March 25 with a 5-4 victory for a 15-5 total score victory. For the first time, and only time until 1971, a team issued a challenge to the Memorial Cup champions. The Fort William Beavers issued a challenge to take on the newly crowned champions. The Beavers traveled to Toronto but were unsuccessful in their challenge as the Canoe Club trounced the Fort William squad on March 31 by a score of 11-1.

The Memorial Cup was originally known as the OHA Memorial Cup and was donated by the Ontario Hockey Association in March, 1919. Initially the Cup was awarded to the national junior hockey champions of Canada. Later on it came to signify Junior 'A' hockey supremacy when in 1934, junior hockey in Canada was divided into 'A' and 'B' classifications. In 1971, junior 'A' hockey was divided once again to form a major junior and a Tier 'II' level. The Memorial Cup was awarded to the higher category. In 1972, a round-robin tournament format replaced the old play-down system to determine the champions. Since then, the champions of the Western Hockey League (WHL), the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) and the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), along with a host club, have met each spring in a round-robin series with the two top teams playing off in a sudden-death game to determine the Cup champions.
