Memorial Cup The 1980 Memorial Cup tournament was a double round robin tournament hosted by Brandon and Regina. The Peterborough Petes, the Cornwall Royals and the Regina Pats would compete for the national major junior "A" title. The Petes were the defending Memorial Cup champions and were representing the Ontario Major Junior Hockey League for the third year in a row. Peterborough defeated the Windsor Spitfires in four games to win the J. Ross Robertson Cup. Cornwall Royals advanced to the Memorial Cup tournament by defeating the Sherbrooke Castors in six games to win the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League's President's Cup. The Pats were making their first visit to the Memorial Cup tournament since their win in 1974. The first three games of the double round robin tournament were played in Brandon and the tournament then moved to Regina for the remainder of the 1980 Memorial Cup finals. Peterborough won the first game of the tournament by defeating the Regina Pats 5-4 in overtime and Regina's record would fall to 0-2 with a 5-3 defeat at the hands of Cornwall in the second game of the tournament. The Petes improved their record to 2-0 with an 8-6 win over Cornwall in game three and Peterborough would clinch a spot in the final as they recorded their third win by defeating Regina 4-3 in the fourth game of the double round robin tournament. Regina scored a 11-2 win over Cornwall in game five to earn their first win of the tournament. Cornwall and Peterborough would meet in game six with the Royals needing a win to advance to the final while a win by the Petes would send Regina to the final based on a better goal differential than Cornwall. Trailing 4-2 heading into the final period the Royals scored three times to post a 5-4 win and advance to the Memorial Cup final. Cornwall in the final game, won in overtime 3-2, securing their second Memorial Cup.

The Memorial Cup was originally known as the OHA Memorial Cup and was donated by the Ontario Hockey Association in March, 1919. Initially the Cup was awarded to the national junior hockey champions of Canada. Later on it came to signify Junior 'A' hockey supremacy when in 1934, junior hockey in Canada was divided into 'A' and 'B' classifications. In 1971, junior 'A' hockey was divided once again to form a major junior and a Tier 'II' level. The Memorial Cup was awarded to the higher category. In 1972, a round-robin tournament format replaced the old play-down system to determine the champions. Since then, the champions of the Western Hockey League (WHL), the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) and the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), along with a host club, have met each spring in a round-robin series with the two top teams playing off in a sudden-death game to determine the Cup champions.
