Memorial Cup The Kitchener Rangers of the Ontario Hockey League hosted the 1984 Memorial Cup tournament. The Rangers had captured the Ontario Hockey League regular season title. Joining the Rangers from the OHL were the Ottawa 67's having won the J. Ross Robertson Cup by defeating Kitchener 8 to 4 in an eight point series. Representing the Western Hockey League were the Kamloops Junior Oilers who had defeated the Regina Pats in the finals. The Oilers scored overtime wins in games six and seven to advance to the Memorial Cup Tournament. The Laval Voisins defeated the Longueuil Chevaliers in six games to earn the right to represent the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League at the Memorial Cup. In the round robin tournament the Rangers emerged as the top team with a perfect 3-0 record to earn one of the two spots in the final. Ottawa finished in second place with two wins and a loss and they would meet Kamloops in the semi final as the Oilers ended the round robin with a 1-2 record while Laval was winless in three games. In the semi final the 67's beat Kamloops 7-2. Facing Kitchener in the final game the Ottawa 87's won 7-2 to earn the Memorial Cup.

The Memorial Cup was originally known as the OHA Memorial Cup and was donated by the Ontario Hockey Association in March, 1919. Initially the Cup was awarded to the national junior hockey champions of Canada. Later on it came to signify Junior 'A' hockey supremacy when in 1934, junior hockey in Canada was divided into 'A' and 'B' classifications. In 1971, junior 'A' hockey was divided once again to form a major junior and a Tier 'II' level. The Memorial Cup was awarded to the higher category. In 1972, a round-robin tournament format replaced the old play-down system to determine the champions. Since then, the champions of the Western Hockey League (WHL), the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) and the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), along with a host club, have met each spring in a round-robin series with the two top teams playing off in a sudden-death game to determine the Cup champions.
