Memorial Cup The Ontario Hockey League's Oshawa Generals hosted the 1987 Memorial Cup Tournament after they defeated the North Bay Centennials in a "Super Series" of the two division winning teams to see who would host the Memorial Cup. The Generals, who defeated North Bay in seven games in the "super series" were joined by the Medicine Hat Tigers and the Longueuil Chevaliers in the Canadian Hockey League championship tournament. The Generals also needed seven games to defeat the Centennials for the J. Ross Robertson Cup. This resulted in only thress teams competing in the Memorial Cup tournament. It had been previously determined that if the same team won both the "super series" and the OHL title that only three teams would compete in the Memorial Cup Tournament. The Longueuil Chevaliers won the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League title by defeating the Chicoutimi Sagueneens in five games. In the Western Hockey League the Medicine Hat Tigers defeated the Portland Winter Hawks in a final series that went seven games. With three teams competing the double round robin format was reintroduced for the first time since 1982. The Generals won their first three games posting wins of 3-2 and 6-3 over Longueuil and 4-2 over the Tigers. With that record of 3-0 Oshawa advanced directly to the final and the final two games of the round robin were replaced by a two game total goal semi final series between Medicine Hat and Longueuil. The Tigers won the first game 6-0 and took game two by a 3-1 scored to advance to the final with a 9-1 margin in total goals. In the final Trevor Linden scored two goals as the Tigers defeated Oshawa 6-2 to win their first ever Memorial Cup title.

The Memorial Cup was originally known as the OHA Memorial Cup and was donated by the Ontario Hockey Association in March, 1919. Initially the Cup was awarded to the national junior hockey champions of Canada. Later on it came to signify Junior 'A' hockey supremacy when in 1934, junior hockey in Canada was divided into 'A' and 'B' classifications. In 1971, junior 'A' hockey was divided once again to form a major junior and a Tier 'II' level. The Memorial Cup was awarded to the higher category. In 1972, a round-robin tournament format replaced the old play-down system to determine the champions. Since then, the champions of the Western Hockey League (WHL), the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) and the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), along with a host club, have met each spring in a round-robin series with the two top teams playing off in a sudden-death game to determine the Cup champions.
