Memorial Cup The Western Hockey League, Saskatoon Blades played host to the 1989 Memorial Cup Tournament along with the Swift Current Broncos, the Peterborough Petes and the Laval Titan. The Swift Current Broncos went undefeated in the Western Hockey League playoffs eliminating the Portland Winter Hawks in the finals for the right to participate in the Memorial Cup. The Laval Titan defeated the Victoriaville Tigres in seven games to win the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League title. The Peterborough Petes won their sixth J. Ross Robertson Cup as they defeated the Niagara Falls Thunder in six games to win the Ontario Hockey League title. The outcome of the final game of the round robin round between Swift Current and Saskatoon would determine who would get a bye to the final game. Swift Current's undefeated streak of 14 games came to an end as Saskatoon won 5-4. The Laval Titan and the Peterborough Petes met in a tie breaker game with the winner moving on to the semi final against Swift Current. Peterborough won 5-4 win to advance to the semi final. In the semi final Swift Current posted a 6-2 win to earn a spot in the final game against the host Blades. The Blades and Broncos were tied 3-3 at the end of sixty minutes sending the final to overtime. Swift Current won 4-3.

The Memorial Cup was originally known as the OHA Memorial Cup and was donated by the Ontario Hockey Association in March, 1919. Initially the Cup was awarded to the national junior hockey champions of Canada. Later on it came to signify Junior 'A' hockey supremacy when in 1934, junior hockey in Canada was divided into 'A' and 'B' classifications. In 1971, junior 'A' hockey was divided once again to form a major junior and a Tier 'II' level. The Memorial Cup was awarded to the higher category. In 1972, a round-robin tournament format replaced the old play-down system to determine the champions. Since then, the champions of the Western Hockey League (WHL), the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) and the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), along with a host club, have met each spring in a round-robin series with the two top teams playing off in a sudden-death game to determine the Cup champions.
