Memorial Cup In 1993 the Ontario Hockey League hosted the Memorial Cup. The hosting of the tournament would be given to the winner of a "Super Series" between the regular season champions of the Emms and Leyden Divisions. The Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds, the Emms Division champions won the "Super Series" in four games over the Peterborough Petes. The Petes and Greyhounds would meet again in the OHL finals with Peterborough winning in five games to claim the J. Ross Robertson Cup. The Laval Titan finished the regular season in second place in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League overall standings and won the President's Cup. In the final series the Titan defeated the Sherbrooke Faucons in five games to win the QMJHL title. The Western Hockey League's regular season champion Swift Current Broncos advanced to the Memorial Cup by defeating the Portland Winter Hawks in seven games. The final game of the round robin featured the host Greyhounds and the Petes with both teams looking for a win to advance directly to the championship final. Sault Ste. Marie won the game 7-3 to earn a spot in the final for the second year in a row. In the tiebreaker In the semi final game the Petes beat Laval 3-1 to advance to the final game. In the final game the host Greyhounds skated to a 4-2 win to capture their first Memorial Cup championship.

The Memorial Cup was originally known as the OHA Memorial Cup and was donated by the Ontario Hockey Association in March, 1919. Initially the Cup was awarded to the national junior hockey champions of Canada. Later on it came to signify Junior 'A' hockey supremacy when in 1934, junior hockey in Canada was divided into 'A' and 'B' classifications. In 1971, junior 'A' hockey was divided once again to form a major junior and a Tier 'II' level. The Memorial Cup was awarded to the higher category. In 1972, a round-robin tournament format replaced the old play-down system to determine the champions. Since then, the champions of the Western Hockey League (WHL), the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) and the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), along with a host club, have met each spring in a round-robin series with the two top teams playing off in a sudden-death game to determine the Cup champions.
