NCAA Women's Basketball Division I Champions
The Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) conducted the first national women's college basketball tournament in 1972..The AIAW Large College tournament determined the women's national champion for 10 years until supplanted by the NCAA. In 1982, most Division I teams entered the first NCAA tournament, rather than the last one staged by the AIAW.
The NCAA Division I Women's Tournament has a field of 64 teams, of which 30 are conference champions and 34 are at-large entries chosen by committee. The tournament has the system of regional tournaments, leading up to a Final Four.
