The Canadian Football League (CFL) is a professional Canadian football league. It consists of nine teams, divided into two divisions, with four teams in the East Division and five in the West Division. The CFL is the highest professional level of Canadian football and is headquartered in Toronto.. Eight are charter members from the league's inaugural 1958 season: the BC Lions, Calgary Stampeders, Edmonton Elks (formerly Eskimos), Hamilton Tiger-Cats, Montreal Alouettes, Saskatchewan Roughriders, Toronto Argonauts, and Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Although expansion teams have joined the league throughout its history, especially during the league's brief expansion into the United States, only the Ottawa Redblacks continue to play in the league today.

CFL - West Most Outstanding Defensive Player Award - Norm Fieldgate Trophy

The Most Outstanding Defensive Player Award is annually awarded to the best defensive player in the Canadian Football League. The winner of the award is selected by members of the Football Reporters of Canada along with the head coaches in the CFL. The two nominees for the award are the James P. McCaffrey Trophy winner from the East Division, and the Norm Fieldgate Trophy winner from the West Division. Between 1955 and 1973, both defensive players and offensive lineman competed for the CFL's Most Outstanding Lineman Award. By the 1974 season, the league decided to make two separate awards for both defensive players and offensive lineman.
