Originally founded in 1915 as Pacific Coast Conference. Charter members (4): California, Oregon, Oregon State and Washington. Admitted later (6): Washington State in 1917; Stanford in 1918; Idaho and USC (Southern Cal) in 1922; Montana in 1924; and UCLA in 1928. Withdrew later (1): Montana in 1950 (left for the Mountain States Conf.).
The PCC dissolved in 1959 and the AAWU (Athletic Assn. of Western Universities) was founded. Charter members (5): California, Stanford, UCLA, USC and Washington. Admitted later (5): Washington State in 1962; Oregon and Oregon State in 1964; Arizona and Arizona State in 1978. Conference renamed Pacific-8 in 1968 and Pacific-10 in 1978.
