Game Summary

When the AFL and NFL agreed to merge into a single league in 1971 they also agreed to play a championship game between the leagues, starting after the 1966 season. The heavily favored NFC Green Bay Packers defeated the AFL champion Kansas City Chiefs 35-10 in the first championship game. Vince Lombardi's Green Bay Packers (13-2) against Hank Stram's Chiefs (12-2-1), the game played before a non full house crowd of 61,946 fans in the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

The 1966 Kansas City Chiefs went 11-2-1 beating Buffalo 31-7 on the road to win the AFL Championship. The franchise had won the AFL title as the Dallas Texans four years earlier. Coach Hank Stram had an offense with running backs Mike Garrett and Curtis McClinton, quarterback Len Dawson and wide receiver Otis Taylor. The defense had 33 interceptions in 1966.

The Green Bay Packers had won their fourth NFL championship in the previous six years, with a 34-27 victory over the Dallas Cowboys. That game ended dramatically with Tom Brown intercepting Don Meredith's last second pass in the end zone. Vince Lombardi coached a team having Bart Starr, receivers Boyd Dowler and Carroll Dale, with running backs Jim Taylor and Elijah Pitts. The defense was also outstanding, leading the Packers to a 12-2 record. Those two losses came by a combined four points.

Max McGee caught seven passes off the arm of Bart Starr for 138 yards and two touchdowns. The most valuable player of the gane, Starr completed 16 of 23 passes for 250 yards and two touchdowns. Elijah Pitts ran for two other Green Bay scores. The Chiefs' 10 points came in the second quarter with a seven yard touchdown pass from Len Dawson to Curtis McClinton.
