On May 15, 2002, the American Football Women's League debuted as the first west coast based women's football league. The league had teams from Los Angeles, Long Beach, San Diego, Arizona, and San Francisco.The majority of these teams had spent the previous season in the WAFL. Sacremento also originally in league withdrew before playing. In March 2003 the league officially disbanded.
