The League Championship Series began in 1969
as a five-game series, and expanded to a seven-game format
in 1985. Currently the winners of the Divisional Series
of each of the repective leagues meet each other in this
series. The winners of each of the League Championship
Series,
are
awarded
the respective league pennant,
and
play for
the
World Series Championship.
