An original idea of then commisioner of baseball, Fred Fick, the award was first presented in 1956. From 1956 until 1966, only one pitcher from the major leagues was selected. After 1966 one pitcher from the American, and one from the National League were selected. After Denny McLain and Mike Cuellar tied for the American League award in 1969, the balloting system was changed, from the single writer, single ballot to two sportswriters from each city voting for this award. The writers are chosen by the local chapter of the BBWAA. Each writer votes for three pitchers, with 5 points awarded for a first-place vote, 3 for second place, and 1 for third place. The Cy Young Memorial Award was named for the great pitcher who had died in November of 1955.

* Denotes winner was a unanimous selection.
