The Hutch Award is named for former major league pitcher and manager Fred Hutchinson, who died of cancer on Nov. 12, 1964.

The Award was created by three long-time friends: Bob Prince, broadcaster for the Pittsburgh Pirates; Jim Enright, Chicago sports writer; and Ritter Collett, sports editor of the Dayton, Ohio, Journal Herald. They also established a scholarship fund for medical students interest in cancer research. The award is given to a major league player who best exemplifies the fighting spirit and competitive desire of the late Fred Hutchinson.
