In 1946, The Sporting News established its Rookie of the Year award. For the first two years and again in 1950, a single award was given for all of major-league baseball. In 1949 and since 1951, TSN has given an award to a player from each league. In 1963 the award was limited to position players only, as the Rookie Pitcher of the Year Award was started.
